The period from the beginning of one heartbeat to the beginning of the next is called the cardiac cycle. The cardiac cycle consists of a period of contraction (called systole, SIS-toe-lee) followed by a period of relaxation (called diastole, die-ASS-toe-lee). The blood is pumped out of your heart during systole. During diastole, your heart relaxes and fills with blood. (During systole, the heart squeezes or pumps; during diastole, it dilates or relaxes.)

Your heart must relax fully before it can contract again. This allows the heart to fill with blood. At 70 beats per minute, the cardiac cycle lasts about 8\10 second.

In a healthy, resting adult the heart beats about 72 times per minute, about 104,000 times a day, or about 2 1/1 billion times in a lifetime. It pumps about 3 ounces of blood with each about 5 or more quarts each minute.

This amounts to approximately 2,000 gallons a day. An 18-foot-c swimming pool holds about 6,500 galIonsyour heart could fill the a little more than 3 days! The millions of gallons of blood that your heart pumps in a lifetime is almost beyond comprehension. During stenuous exercise, the heart may have to pump four to seven times the amount of blood it pumps at rest.
